MEET JEFF

Jeff Getting has practiced law in Kalamazoo County for 30 years. As an Assistant Prosecutor from 1990 to 1998, he successfully prosecuted thousands of cases, including several homicides, drug cases and sex crimes. Working primarily in Circuit Court, Jeff routinely handled the toughest, most high-profile and difficult to prosecute cases in Kalamazoo County. After being in private practice for 14 years, Jeff was elected Prosecuting Attorney in 2012 and reelected in 2016.

As the Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney, Jeff has focused on High Impact Prosecutions, working with local law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for West Michigan to identify, prosecute and incarcerate Kalamazoo County’s most dangerous criminals. He has also supported vital alternatives like Drug Court, Mental Health Court and Family Dependency Treatment Court for nonviolent offenders with addiction and mental health issues. Jeff was a leader in bringing a Veterans Court to Kalamazoo County in 2016.

Since being reelected in 2016, Jeff has focused on making the Kalamazoo County justice system better trauma-informed and true to the American ideal that every citizen deserves equal justice under law. This has included supporting the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program’s (KPEP) Walnut & Park Coffee Shop and Washington Square Diner for offenders reintegrating into society. It’s also meant advocating to Raise the Age for 17-year olds being charged as adults in Michigan’s criminal justice system, which passed on a bipartisan basis and was signed into law by the Governor. More recently, Jeff has pushed for the creation of the nation’s first trauma-specific program for trauma survivors and children in the criminal justice system.

A lifelong West Michigander, Jeff was born and raised in Wyoming, Michigan, graduating from Wyoming Rogers High School in 1982. He then moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University, completing dual degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Jeff earned his law degree from Indiana University School of Law – Bloomington in 1989.

In the community and throughout Michigan, Jeff is a leader in prosecution and criminal justice issues. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM), on the PAAM Legislative Committee and the PAAM Best Practices Initiative. He is also a member of Prevention Works’ Board of Directors, the Kalamazoo County Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition and the KPEP Board of Directors.

Jeff has served on the Board of Directors for Guardian Advocacy and Finance Services, the Kalamazoo County Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan’s Attorney Discipline Board Hearing Panel. He is also a member of Kiwanis and former Coach for West Portage Little League.
